Car Wars is a vehicle combat simulation game set in an post-apocalyptic future. It was developed by Steve Jackson Games, and first published in 1980.
The CanGames Sprint uses the 5th edition rules, which is the most adaptable version to use with miniatures (such as Hot Wheels or Matchbox cars). Some homegrown rules have been added in order to simplify some aspects of the game. The intent of these rules is to keep the action intense, while not sacrificing the spirit of the original game.
The CanGames Sprint is a long running event at CanGames, and has regularly attracted players each year. It runs each year at 2:00 pm on the Saturday of the convention. The game has a limit of only 6 players, so it usually fills up quickly.
The cars vary in design, each with unique strengths and weaknesses. All cars are 'Division 5' rated, so they are designed to be balanced. All cars are armoured and have some kind of weapon for 'offensive driving'. Players can choose their car, but this is done based on registration order. Register early to get first pick of the cars!
Racing tracks for the CanGames Sprint have changed over the years, and the 'long' track from last year proved to be the best ever. From a strategic perspective, fast cars take advantage of the long stretches, manuverable cars can handle the the tight corners, and the crossing lanes in the center encourages combat (which is particularly good for car designs with heavier weapons and armour). The long track also makes it better for players since they have more space around the table to plan their strategy and view the unfolding action.
Feedback from last year has helped improve the modified ruleset and action on the track. New for this year is ... This should be the best CanGames Sprint ever!
